As all of you know the cost of doing business keeps rising in all areas and athletics is no exception. Paying for referees, game administration, custodians, and other overhead costs can be over $1000 for a night for a high school basketball game. It’s hard to believe but there are only 40 days until students report for class. We have been able to fill most of our positions at school but are still looking for a few in order to be fully staffed. If you or somebody you know is looking for a job please pass the word! If we are unable to fill the positions it’s the students who will be most impacted as changes to meals or the possibility of cancelling junior high athletic seasons are very real.
Assistant Cook Position: Charlo has an Assistant Cook position open for the 2023-2024 school year. This a full time position during the school year which begins approximately Aug. 20 for employees. Charlo will be on a 4 day per week schedule: Mon-Thu. All applicants should like kids and working in a school setting. Applicants must have a HS Diploma or GED, must pass a fingerprint background check, and be motivated to be a team player. Wages DOE. Health insurance benefits, retirement, sick leave, and vacation leave are all provided by the School District. Campus Construction: There is a lot of demolition and construction going on this Summer at the school so we request that everyone stay off the campus unless with coaches or school personnel. We are beginning to install new HVAC equipment in the elementary and high school buildings. There will be roofing repairs being made to the library and high school. There will be work to change our weight room area. A small addition will be added to the junior high in order to improve insulation as well as give us more storage. There will be lots of digging, there will be lots of old material laying around, and there will many different workers trying to focus on their jobs. We know that the play ground/outdoor basketball courts are popular places for students to play but please help us keep everyone safe by finding another place to recreate this Summer. State Legislature and Public Education: Just when you thought the dust had settled with the 2023 State Legislature something comes along to breathe life back into the politics. There were many bills passed by the legislature which dramatically affect public education. Depending on your perspective it can be good or bad. Recently, challenges were issued to the constitutionality of charter school bills. It is expected more challenges will be issued for other bills involving enrollment, special education, transgender issues, and school safety. Over the Summer, schools will be dealing with changes to law, policy changes, waiting on possible injunctions, and hoping courts will settle arguments as quickly as possible so they can conduct school business efficiently once the first day of class dawns. School’s Out for Summer! Alice Cooper’s hit song has been blaring in schools across Montana this week. It has been an interesting and challenging school year for many different reasons, every school year is for that matter. At the end of the day we have a lot to be grateful for as the majority of students performed at high levels. 2023-2024 Staffing: It’s no secret that Charlo is losing some amazing staff members. We are going to miss all of them. It’s also no secret that replacing anyone these days is extremely difficult no matter the line of work. It’s arguably worse in the field of education. Despite all of that, we are doing our very best to find people for positions we need in order to make next year work. To date, we have hired 3 new teachers and 4 new coaches. We have been working very hard to recruit and reassign current staff to offer the same classes to students next year that we offered this year. We still have several coaching positions open. I hope this is not the “New Normal”: Everywhere you go there are shortage of workers. Public schools are no different. The teacher shortage is very real and very challenging. We are dealing with those shortages as best we can. Coaching is another place where there are shortages. We have several openings listed below. Finding help with running extra-curricular activities is another issue. For the first time since I can remember we were unable to get enough help to run a junior high track meet this year. Other schools are having the same issues with getting help. Several schools who normally host a track meet could not get volunteers to work therefore the number of track meets has dwindled. Whether it is sports at school, AAU sports, 4H, or the county fair: parents who want their kids to have the same opportunities they had need to step up! We get closer and closer all the time to cancelling more events due to the lack of help running those events. If there is anything you can do to help please contact the office. We are already planning for next year and will need help with tickets, line judging, score books, score clocks, shot clocks, etc. Forfeiting games or cancelling games are becoming more of a reality without help from parents and community.
