Question of the Week: My question is why are the lunch ladies not required to wear hair nets?

Thank you for the question! According to Montana Code our kitchen staff are required to wear a hat or a hair net. Our kitchen staff chooses to wear hats. If a student does find a hair in their food, they are encouraged to show it to an adult and we will provide a new tray and meal.

Here is the specific language of Montana Code:

Mont. Admin. r. 37.110.210 - FOOD EMPLOYEES: (7)(f) Food employees shall wear hair restraints such as hats, hair coverings or nets, beard restraints, and clothing that covers body hair. The hair restraints must be designed and worn to effectively keep hair from contacting exposed food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single service and single-use articles.

(i) Subsection (7) (f) does not apply to food employees such as counter staff who only serve beverages and wrapped or packaged foods, hostesses, and wait staff if they present a minimal risk of contaminating exposed food, clean equipment, utensils, linens, and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles.

Communication is important to us and we want to answer your questions! If you have a question, please email it to [email protected].
